More than 900,000 people live in the slums in Mathare. There is very little space and our houses are very close together. One of the biggest problems of having so many people in such a small space is collecting and disposing of all the rubbish produced. We do not have regular rubbish collections and there are few waste disposal facilities. As a result, we live in houses that are surrounded by uncollected garbage and sewage, and blocked drains are a common problem. All this contributes to the spread of diseases such as malaria, cholera, tuberculosis and dysentery. At MYSA, we do our bit to help clean up our communities. We organise weekly cleanups in each of our sixteen zones of operation. Using rakes, spades and wheel barrows, we collect garbage, clear blocked drains and plant trees in public spaces. The teams that complete cleanup activities are awarded six league points. This compares to three points for playing in a match. In addition, each individual team member gets two leadership points for participating in a cleanup. The members with the most Leadership Awards points win education scholarships to help them finish their education. |
