Mathare United the best ranked Kenyan club in the past decade
Friday, 13 January 2012 04:49

muYesterday the International Federation for Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) published a list of the top football clubs in Africa for the last decade (2001-10).

The two highest ranked Kenyan clubs are Tusker (147th) … and Mathare United (235th)!

As many top African clubs were founded before or around the time of independence 50 years ago, that’s a surprisingly good ranking for our club which only started in 1994, only joined the Kenyan Premier League in 1999 and, as our club took the lead in the fight for corruption-free football here, was constantly being punished and “fixed” by the KFF during the first half of the decade (1999-2005 seasons) through blatantly biased refereeing, dubious deductions of boardroom points, etc.

Also, as CAF has 55 member countries with top leagues of 18-20 teams each, there are around 1,000 Premier League clubs in Africa. So Mathare United is already among the top 25%.

Mathare United is also likely the only club on the list which draws all it’s coaches and players from the same youth programme in one of Africa’s largest and poorest slums.

What’s next? We’re actually aiming to be among the top 10 African clubs within five years …
