IIn 1988 we linked sports and development in slum environmental/ garbage cleanup. We organize weekly cleanups for 16 zones of operation with use of rakes, spades and wheel barrows, mainly to collect garbage to designated points, open drainage and plant trees to public land and schools.

The population which majority of the people are very poor to an extent of having little or nothing to eat. They live in shanties surrounded by uncollected garbage, human waste blocked drainage system which is a common future. All these contributes to chronic diseases like Malaria, cholera, T.B, dysentery which can be prevented and are major causes of disabilities and even deaths.
Under this project, young people and their teams are encouraged to voluntarily clean their community. They remove solid waste weekly and unclog open sewers to reduce disease.
The teams that complete cleanup activities are awarded 6 points in the league standings and individual players get 2 points in every completed cleanup to increasing their chances of winning a leadership award and also to enable them qualify for tha MYSA playoffs. This also teaches the youth to be responsible for their environment and be winners on and off the pitch.

The youth of Mathare and its neighboring have been involved in the cleaning up of their environment and opening of blocked drainage systems with little or sometimes no proper tools at all. All the teams participating in MYSA leagues have to do at least two community service programmes scheduled on their fixtures.
Each year MYSA organizes a total of 48 cleanups 16 cleanups are done during special occasions e.g World Environment Day, 32 cleanups are done in our 16 zones namely;
- Mathare
- Kariobangi South
- Korogocho
- Mathare North

- Mbotela
- Eastleigh Dandora
- Kayole
- Ruaraka
|
- Kahawa Barracks
- Kasarani Mwiki
- Huruma

- Maili Saba
|
MYSA had purchased of 2 trucks and 2 tractors to assist clean up. These were later sold when it became expensive to run them due to old age. MYSA is considering acquiring skills and the necessary equipment which can be used to start a garbage recycling plant. This can be one of the biggest income generating activities for MYSA.
Our main goal
To transfer teamwork on the field into teamwork on development off the field this is why a team earns 3 points for winning a match and 6 points for clearing garbage. MYSA has eleven basic rules for winning off the field. Including I will promote environmental awareness and improvement as healthy athletes needs a healthy environment.
