About ShootBack

MYSA Shootback is our photography project. Members who take part in the project learn the art of photography and film-making and go out in the community to make a record of daily life in Mathare. There are also weekly discussions and journal writing sessions about the issues and themes that come up from these photography and filming trips out in the community.

Shootback enables us to tell stories about events in our everyday lives and to record what it is like to grow up in the slums of Mathare. It has also helps us keep a record of our activities and create a history of MYSA.

The project has published two books – the first, Shootback, featured a selection of photographs telling the story of life in the slums. The second, Image in the MDGs, was put together in collaboration with UN Habitat and showed photographs and captions relating to the Millennium Development Goals.

Shootback footage has been used on the Sports for Social Change Network DVD and a documentary, Women Against Poverty, featured at the Nuff Film Festival in Norway.
